In 1979 I was a kid growing up in Palo Alto, CA. It was the year a group of Stanford students came to our public elementary school and emptied the garbage can out on the floor. They then proceeded to go thru every piece of garbage and explain the ways each item could be reused or recycled.
They also explained how our garbage gave us clues as to the ways we could reduce our consumption in the first place. Their program taught us the four R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recover and Recycle.
Now how is it that in Palo Alto we’re teaching school kids this important information as far back as the 1970’s, yet there’s still a great number of people in our country who still don’t get this?
How can we move forward as a society when so many are so far behind?
